Is Time A Measurement, Or Symbol?

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner this past Saturday night with two couples, who are close and dear friends. This was the third such dinner we all have enjoyed together, and I felt compelled to express my feelings.  The six of us enjoyed good food, wine and a variety of interesting conversations. In the course of the evening I found myself looking at my male counterparts, and the wonderful things they have accomplished. They both own and live in beautiful beach houses, and, with their wives help, have decorated those homes with an elegance of intellect, charm and warmth, reflecting their proud achievements. Their attitudes, personalities, and social deportment are reflected in their security of accomplishments in their time.

After listening to these two men speak about their homes, and other investments with such great pride I leaned back, sipped on my drink, and had to ask myself what I had accomplished in the same time as my friends. Then it occurred to me as I callously began to reflect, perhaps time is only a series of events, culminating with the ultimate end: the exit of this existence, (life as we know it) into whatever one might believe lies beyond. Man’s life span of attainment can not be determined at a precise age, or happen in a designated period of time. The study of what constitutes a successful life for a person has as many definitions as there are fish in the oceans. And in my case, I am not confident enough to begin to understand my reason for existence at this moment. However, I am so grateful for my friends as they make me feel accepted on my journey.

I am confident that life is an expedition of interesting roads we all must travel. Some of us are fortunate and are quick to understand this, and manage to get themselves a fine mode of transportation. Others stumble along, perhaps hitchhiking, hoping they will be picked up by a driver with divine guidance to make their trip easier. I suspect the bottom line is not learning from a divine adviser, but to appreciate your own journey, and be thankful for the wisdom it brings to you.  Because life happens as time accumulates, and time is only pieces of your thoughts, which become your memory, grouped together for better understanding.  Now, my memory will have another wonderful evening spent with good friends that will help me understand my journey just a little better.

I thank my first-class friends for this past weekend, and other fine friends that I have encountered on my trip.  From each I have learned a little something about time, and ultimately realizing time is life, and good memories are the symbol for a successful journey.
